All the cities in China are changing, and Shenzhen is the most surprising among them. Thirty years ago, its population was 300,000; now it is 10,000,000. Not only are there many factories; it is also the country’s third largest port and a financial and technological center of southern China. Thanks to the government’s economic liberalization and the people’s hard work, Shenzhen has changed from a fishing village to one of Asia’s liveliest cities. The streets are full of department stores and high-rise apartments. Western newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and magazines like the Economist have made Shenzhen a symbol of Chinese development. Since there are more residents every year, construction is a great annoyance, especially in rush hour traffic. The city is very close to Hong Kong, and it used to be covered with small hills, but the landscape has since been flattened. Ten years from now, Shenzhen’s skyline should be even more dense with buildings.
