The Osaka Prefecture Suita City Police Department have arrested a 33-year old male construction worker from Ikeda City Furuē-machi on suspicion of violating child welfare laws by making his son, a fifth grader in elementary school, request money from strangers.

The man said his son was working alone and denied involvement.

According to the police report, at about 9:25 PM September 12, the man made his 11-year old son stand on the road near the Osaka Subway Midōsuji Line Esaka Station and ask for money with the words “Could you please lend me some money, even if it’s just 100 yen?” The boy is suspected of receiving 200 yen from a 31-year old female passerby.

According to the police, the boy, an eldest son, said “My father told me ‘tell people you’ve lost your wallet, and ask them for money.’ I did it 2-3 times a week throughout August. I gave all the money to my father,” who was in a car parked nearby.

Since August, nighttime commuters and taxi drivers have witnessed the boy repeatedly calling out to people near the station.
