On September 28, the Hyōgo Prefecture Nishiwaki Police Department arrested two Taka-chō residents, an 18-year old employed by a company and a 19-year old high school student, on suspicion of theft of water which they mistook for gasoline from golf cart fuel tanks.

Because gasoline had been stolen from the golf course’s carts 3-4 times since the beginning of September, the employees poured water inside the tanks of broken-down carts to set a trap for the thieves. When investigators later told the youths they’d stolen water, they reportedly replied “Is that right?” their heads drooping sadly.

According to the police report, the two are suspected of using a pump to steal about 20 liters of water (worth 4 yen) from golf carts at the Tako-chō course at about 8 PM on the 27th.

The youths poured the stolen water into their car. When they tried to drive out the next morning, the engine suddenly stalled. A Nishiwaki police officer passing by questioned them and discovered the crime.

The manager of the golf course (male, age 49) said, “I’m relieved the suspects were arrested, but on the other hand, learning they were minors made me feel empty. I want them to quit doing these kinds of things from now on.”
