The weather bureau has corrected the magnitude of the Pacific Ocean earthquake offshore of northeastern Japan to 8.8.

It is the largest in national history.

At 2:46 PM on the 11th, there was an earthquake on the Sanriku Fault offshore of eastern Japan measured in the city of Kuriharashi, Miyagi at Magnitude 7.

According to the Weather Bureau, at the epicenter 10 kilometers deep, the magnitude was 8.4 [since revised to 8.8]. Tsunamis have struck Tokyo and other areas, and there have been damages across a wide area, such as a fire at an industrial complex in Chiba. 4-meter tsunamis have struck cities like Sendai and Kamaishi, Iwate; homes, cars, and the like have been washed away, and bridges have collapsed. There have been two deaths confirmed in Tochigi, and injuries in the capital have included cardiac arrests.

The weather bureau has issued major tsunami warnings for the Pacific coasts of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Chiba, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Wakayama, and the Ito and Ogasawara islands, and waves as tall as 10 meters are expected in Miyagi, Iwate, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Kujukuri Beach in Chiba.

Tremors in southern and central Miyagi, the Fukushima coast and central areas, northern and southern Ibaraki, northern and southern Tochigi, and other areas were stronger than magnitude 6. Tremors in the Iwate coast and inner regions (again), Aizu in Fukushima, southern Gunma, southern Saitama, and northern Chiba were weaker than magnitude 6. Quakes in the Tokyo area were at magnitude 5. At 3:15 this afternoon, there was an earthquake off the coast of Iwate which was registered at under magnitude 6 in the south of the prefecture.

After quake, Prime Minister calls for citizens to act calmly

Prime Minister Kan held a press conference at his official residence and said, “For the bottom of my heart, I wish good health for all who have been affected by this disaster.” “As for our nuclear power, some of our plants have automatically shut down, and we have not yet confirmed any leakage [as of 5 PM].”

Also, the Prime Minister confirmed the national government is following its disaster response protocols and said, “Everyone in the government is working together for the safety of the people and to keep the damage as limited as possible. I ask our citizens to act calmly.”

東日本で巨大地震、停電・火災・大津波被害拡大

11日午後2時46分、三陸沖を震源とする巨大地震があり、宮城県栗原市で震度7を記録した。

気象庁によると、震源の深さは約10キロ・メートル、地震の規模はマグニチュード8・4。東北地方などを津波が襲い、千葉県でコンビナート火災が発生するなど列島で広範な被害が出ている。津波は仙台市、岩手県釜石市などで4メートル以上の高さで到達、家屋や車が流され橋が崩落している。栃木、茨城両県で計2人が死亡、東京都では心肺停止を含む負傷者が出ている。

気象庁は北海道太平洋沿岸、青森、岩手、宮城、福島、茨城、千葉、神奈川、静岡、和歌山各県、伊豆諸島、小笠原諸島に大津波警報を発令、津波の高さは宮城、岩手、福島、茨城各県、千葉県九十九里浜で10メートル以上などと予想される。

震度は、宮城県南部、中部、福島県浜通り・中通り、茨城県北部・南部、栃木県北部・南部でそれぞれ震度6強。また岩手県沿岸、同内陸、福島県会津、群馬県南部、埼玉県南部、千葉県北西部で震度6弱を観測。東京は各地で震度5強。午後3時15分には茨城県沖を震源とする地震があり、茨城県南部で震度6弱を記録した。

地震で首相が呼びかけ、「落ちついて行動を」

菅首相は午後5時前から首相官邸で記者会見し、「被災された方々には心よりお見舞いを申し上げる」としたうえで、「原子力施設では、一部の原子力発電所が自動停止したが、外部への放射能物質の漏えいは現在のところ確認されていない」と述べた。

また、首相を本部長とする緊急災害対策本部を設置したことを明らかにし、「国民の安全を確保し、被害を最小限に抑えるため、政府として総力を挙げて取り組む。国民は落ち着いて行動するようお願いする」と呼びかけた。
