Secretary of State Maehara received an illegal donation from a foreigner living in Japan, a serious blow to his prospects to succeed Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

This failing of Mr. Maehara, who is part of the group that lifted Kan to power, could also inflict serious damage on the government as a whole.

“Including my time as a member of the Kyoto Assembly, I have been a legislator for 19 years, but I have never made accommodations for a donor,” Maehara stressed at a press conference about his seiji to kane [politics and money] problem on the evening of the 4th.

Mr. Maehara has been one of the harshest critics of Ichiro Ozawa, a fellow party member and former representative who is embroiled in a corruption investigation of his own. The rank and file are saying that “the boomerang Mr. Maehara threw has come back to him.”

With this revelation, some in Maehara’s political group are now saying that “even if Prime Minister Kan resigns, Mr. Maehara shouldn’t run in the next election. He should take a ‘one-term vacation.'”
