Smart Phones

Smart Phone in Taiwan Flower Expo

Smart Phones

This year’s must-buy item is a “smart phone.” To be honest, my own life is simple enough – study, go to church, read the news, study, go to church, ready the news – that my own phone isn’t that impressive: it just has a calendar, alarm clock, address book, calculator, and the like. But people in the working world like my father and sister say that their smart phones have helped them tremendously.

iPhones are so popular in Taiwan that as soon as they go on sale, they sell out, so you often can’t even find one. Besides that, however, there are all kinds of smart phones on sale in Taipei. The new models, unlike mine, are very similar to computers: you can use them to go online or write documents, and they can also act as cameras or portable music players. Users can download applications at any time; foreigners particularly depend on the dictionary and map applications. The map confirms your current location, then shows you the best path to your destination. If you don’t even know where the place you want to go is, no problem: you can get online or make a phone call to find out. This program saves people untold time and trouble.

More than a few people think that commuting and business trips take up a lot of time, but a smart phone can let you turn your bus into an office. Since instant messaging is a quiet form of communication, you don’t have to bother other people. Since some applications don’t depend on being connected to a network, your phone can stay useful no matter how strong your signal is.

If you have this product, you can leave your camera, music player, dictionary, map, and such at home. That saves a lot of space in your purse or pocket and cuts your risk of forgetting or losing something. It’s much easier to keep track of only one thing.

Since Taiwan’s major telecom companies support smart phones, making the switch from a regular phone doesn’t take that much time, and the prices are lower every day. You should be careful, because these phones are exclusive to their own countries: for example, a phone bought in Taiwan cannot go online in America. Regardless, if you want to increase your efficiency, a smart phone would be a smart way to do it.
