Japan’s Influence on Me

Japan’s Influence on Me

I lived in Japan for two years, all the way up until this July.
One friend says that I am “a true American and a true Japanese.”
I often bow to people to express gratefulness, but they’re surprised instead.
When other people are speaking, I repeatedly nod and say things like “Hai!” “Hmm!” and “Ehhhhh!”
Sometimes my parents say to me, “Don’t use a Japanese accent when you’re speaking to us. We’re Americans!”
When I returned from Japan, my grandmother saw that I’d lost weight, and she asked in a worried tone, “Did you get sick?”
My one-on-one teacher, Chen Ying-hua, speaks fluent Japanese.
Since I often mix up the two languages, this is a big help to me.
If I say, “In the afternoon at one o’clock the rice ate,” she’ll say, “What does that mean? …Ohh, I get it. Don’t speak Japanese!”
But ICLP isn’t in Japan.
Now Taiwan is influencing me every day.
Maybe next year I’ll become a true Taiwanese.
