Americans love to watch college and pro sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball. Some people watch games on TV every day. When there aren’t games, they often watch sports talk shows. Sports web sites are also popular. Even I often read the news there. Sometimes, the players themselves chat with their fans online.
Why do Americans love to discuss sports so much? What is there to talk about? It often revolves around rumors. Colleges can give scholarships to players. High school players can choose their own college. Sports teams can draft from colleges or from abroad, and they can trade the players they already have. After three years, professional players can also sign a contract with whichever team is interested in them. So there are a lot of rumors about the choices of teams and players. Sometimes, a friend of the player or an employee of the team will secretly talk to a reporter. Sometimes, reporters simply speculate about what might happen.
Rumors can influence the people involved. One football player heard that his team talked to another team about a potential trade involving him. This rumor made him so angry, he demanded his team let him go somewhere else. The team owner gave him an angry response and traded him. Fans talked about a certain amazing basketball player‘s future for two years, and because there were so many rumors, he finally broadcast a one-hour television program about his choice. The next day, everyone in America talked about The Decision.
Sometimes, fans can be more interested in next year than this year. Since you know which teams are good and which are bad about a third of the way into the year, the fans of the bad teams can start to dream of next year, because next year, anything is possible. Now that communication is so easy, rumors are becoming one of the most interesting things about following sports.
