Ma Zhi-yong’s Apartment

My friend Ma Zhi-yong has been living in an apartment on Wenzhou Street since August. Our dormitory is newer than his apartment, but he is closer to our classes. Wenzhou Street is behind the KFC on Xinsheng Road. There are a lot of restaurants in the area, and the Pakistani one is Ma Zhi-yong’s favorite. He takes a bicycle to school and the subway station. Although the street is lively, he can still sleep peacefully at night.
He has his own room, and it’s about as big as ours. His lighting, Internet, and air conditioning are good, and his room came furnished with a desk, a bookshelf, a chair, and a dresser, and a bed. The furniture seems older than ten years old, and the apartment must be over thirty. He cleans his room every Saturday.
His landlord lives in Canada, but the manager lives close by. His suitemates are English, Australian, Malaysian students in their twenties, as well as a teacher in his fifties. They share a bathroom, a kitchen, a patio, and laundry machines. I met his suitemates, and they’re good guys. I heard there alsoare a lot of fun Malaysian guys living in the basement.
The bathroom has hot water at all hours. I heard Ma Zhi-yong is the only person who cleans it. The patio has a lot of bugs, so it’s not so comfortable. His laundry is much more convenient. I have to take my clothes from the thirteenth floor to the basement and pay fifty Taiwan dollars (about $1.50 US) to wash them twice a week. The apartment floor, walls, and ceiling are all white, like in our dorm, and I find that color relaxing. The kitchen, the bathroom, and the other common rooms don’t have air conditioning, so they’re too hot sometimes.
He pays 8000 NTD (~$250 USD) for rent. He doesn’t pay for water, but he does pay for electricity. He had to pay a deposit to the manager when he arrived. He wanted to live in the dormitory, but his application was too late, so he found this apartment on the Internet. Ma Zhi-yong thinks the dorm is the best, but his apartment isn’t bad itself. I agree.
